Sevilla keep pressure on leaders Real in La Liga

MADRID: Sevilla beat promoted Tenerife 2-1 away to keep the pressure on the leaders in La Liga on Saturday. Diego Perotti and Renato scored in each half to give Manolo Jimenez’s side the victory and moving third-placed Sevilla on to 25 points, level with Real Madrid in second. Real host Racing Santander later on Saturday, before leaders Barcelona, with 26 points, visit Athletic Bilbao in a re-run of last year’s King’s Cup final. A hotly-disputed injury-time penalty gave Deportivo Coruna a 2-1 victory over visiting Atletico Madrid, that moved them up to fourth with 22 points. Sergio Aguero poached an early goal for Atletico but Argentine compatriot Diego Colotto levelled for Depor with a back post header in the 20th. Mexico’s Andres Guardado netted the spot kick at the end after Pablo Ibanez was penalised for bringing down Albert Lopo. Struggling Atletico remain in the relegation zone with seven points. reuters

Inter stroll to win, go eight clear in Serie A

ROME: Teenage forward Mario Balotelli responded to flak from coach Jose Mourinho by scoring to help Serie A leaders Inter Milan to a 3-1 win at Bologna on Saturday. Balotelli, who was replaced by Samuel Eto’o at halftime, headed in a corner in the 42nd minute after Bologna’s Marcelo Zalayeta had cancelled out Diego Milito’s opener for the champions. Esteban Cambiasso drove home a diagonal strike in the 72nd to seal a win that gives Inter 32 points from 13 games, eight points more than second-placed Juventus, who can cut the deficit back down to five by beating Udinese at home on Sunday. Balotelli has been criticised several times recently for his attitude by Mourinho, who gave the 19-year-old a mark of “close to zero” for his performance in Inter’s 1-1 draw with AS Roma before the international break. Inter had full back Maicon sent off in stoppage time, apparently for dissent. reuters
